Writing Many parents ask, “How can I help my child become a better writer?” Included in this newsletter is a copy of a story frame you can use at home. This will help guide your student through a story, making sure they include all the important parts. Begin a narrative story by identifying the setting and character. Use details to describe an important person, place or object. Next, move on to the actual adventure or problem where the action takes place. Use time order words to help keep the story on track. Conclude the story with a feeling or lesson the character has learned. Using this format will help insure your child has the basics to a good narrative story. This story frame can be used to retell a story, movie, or television show as well. Have students look for evidence in a book that the author is using a similar guide to write his/ her story. Helping them become aware of an author’s technique will eventually lead to these skills being carried over into their own writing. Story Frame Title Author Beginning (Setting: when, where Characters: who, include details) Middle (adventure or problem/solution) First Next Then Suddenly Finally Ending (feeling or what you learned) |
