Everyday
Mathematics Over the next month, in Everyday Mathematics, the children will continue practicing their addition facts. Through a variety of activities, using aids such as dominoes, dice, the addition/subtraction facts table, and the fact triangles, children will see number relationships. Subtraction will also be used during these activities. Through this practice, facts will start to become automatic. The children will continue working with skills they have become accustomed to as well as being introduced to new ones. In measurement, they will work with centimeters and when working with money, the quarter will be used also. Up to now the children have been using the analog clock to tell time, this month they will be introduced to the digital notations. They will be practicing writing and telling the time digitally and the nearest 5 minutes will be introduced. Then the children will be introduced to geometry through the use of attribute blocks, drawing using templates, and playing games. They will explore the characteristics of 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes and will be looking at symmetry. The children will continue reviewing money and place value using games and base ten blocks for reinforcement. They will also continue to expand their understanding of addition and subtraction through number stories and review. The concepts of fractions will be introduced beginning with 1/2. The help you give your child at home to reinforce what is being taught in school is greatly appreciated, and it gives him or her a feeling of accomplishment and pride. |
