May 2006

          April showers bring May flowers!  We will be working on a special gift for Mother’s Day.  Field trip information will be sent home soon.  It would be helpful if the students wore their purple Shepard Hill shirts or a purple shirt on the field trip.

          In reading we continue to practice our fluency and sight-words.

Decoding and phonics skills being taught this month are long vowels and their spellings. This will be the last month for Reading At Home Books and building character awards. (Other activities will take place in the classroom to replace them.)

          In writing the students have been writing riddles and sharing them with their classmates.  Students have been doing an excellent job.  Please have your child read them to you as they bring them home.

          In math we will be reviewing telling time, counting money, geometry, place value and solving number stories using addition and subtraction. Please continue to practice math facts at home frequently. 

          April awards for showing respect for others were given to Makayla and Elizabeth. Congratulations!  May’s theme for building character is “respect for self”.  Self respect is thinking positively about yourself and taking care of your body.  Taking pride in your work and standing up for what you know is right are other ways to show self respect.

          It’s that time again, when we are assessing the students to see the progress they have made this year.  We will be testing all month so a good breakfast, early bed times and attendance are extremely beneficial for the students especially during this time.  The next progress report will be sent home at the end of the month so I will have assessment grades ready to share with you.

          Some dates to remember are: May 12th, the school store will be opened to students and May 17th, early dismissal at 12:40 p.m. May 22nd is a P.T.O. meeting at 6:30.  May 26th is school spirit day.  Students can wear red, white and blue.  May 29th is Memorial Day, therefore there is no school.
