Dear Parents,

Please look for a new first grade team newsletter.  A  current newsletter should be on the website soon.  The newsletters are designed to give you information about what we are doing in class each month. The letters are also posted on our web site (www.plainfieldschools.org).

Leveled readers will continue to be sent home with all students.  Some students are showing lots of growth.  Mrs. Dion just completed a new round of reading assessments for our class.  Daily reading is a great way to improve reading and comprehension skills.  Please spend five minutes a day reading with your child and then fill out the reading log.  The log and the book should be returned to school each day.

Math has been moving very quickly.  A few shorter chapters have resulted in assessments being done on March 11 and   March 31.  Chapter Eight’s assessment will be given on Friday.  I will send home the results on the next progress report.

I will send progress reports home the week we return from spring vacation.   On this report you will find a new running record level from the assessments done by Mrs. Dion.  I will include the latest spelling scores and the results of our math assessments.  This may provide an opportunity for some discussion.  I will set up some time for phone conferences.

Many of the students still need some extra work on sight word recognition.  If you can review the lists with them weekly, their recognition and reading will improve.  I am looking for a couple of volunteers who can come in for 1 hour a week on a weekly basis to work on site words with individual students.  The best times would be between 10:00 and 11:00 or 11:00 and 12:00.  Please let me know if anyone is available.

Don’t forget spring vacation is from April 19th to April 23rd.  Have a great week!

The fun fair is Friday April 16 from 5:30 to 8:00.  The Basket raffle drawing will start at 7:30; don’t forget to get your tickets.  The next P.T.O. meeting is Monday April 26, at 6:30 PM.  The Annual Music Expo is Thursday April 29th at 1:30 PM.  The second round of explorations starts April 30th.

The character trait for April is Respect.

Sincerely,

William L. Nagel
